Trauma hijacks our bodies and minds.
It’s hard to relax, sit still, concentrate, and enjoy life.
Whether the trauma of repeated offenses in childhood like physical, emotional, or the intensity of single events like accidents, combat, or the death of a loved one, the effects of trauma stay with us.
These events live in our bodies and minds.
We remain on constant alert.
Our nervous systems have a beautiful natural intelligence designed to keep us safe in times of danger. When we are faced with a threat, we go into either “fight,” “flight,” or, if the threat cannot be escaped, “freeze” and shut down.
We become traumatized when these vital instincts are not allowed to do their job. Therefore, the physiological energy of “fight, flight, and freeze” gets stuck in our bodies and nervous systems as unprocessed activation.
This activation can feel like uncomfortable, restless energy in your limbs and torso, making you unable to sit still. You may want to run or move your body, but are also tired because you struggle to relax and sleep well.
Often, this energy lives in our bodies undetected, simmering at a constant, low-level activation. This physical energy is intimately connected with our mental health. It can cause us to become hypervigilant, anxious, depressed, socially isolated, sleep deprived, and confused.
Therapy can help release trauma’s hold.
In trauma therapy, we use awareness techniques to help you gain a felt sense of how the trauma feels in your body. As we learn to accept and integrate these sensations, the body begins to relax.
With compassion and patience, we can peel back the layers of memory and activation that still exist in us today.
